What a wedding season this is turning out to be, with so many incredible couples, fantastic venues and weddings that are an absolute joy to photograph.

And Phoebe and Harry's wedding at Houchins Wedding Venue in Essex was right up there!

From the moment I arrived, it was obvious that these two are a match made in heaven. The way they interacted with each other, the laughter, the excitement and the sheer amount of love surrounding them made this one of those weddings where you can't help but get caught up in the atmosphere.

Houchins provided the perfect backdrop for them to celebrate with their friends and family, and the whole day was packed with those little moments that make wedding photography so special.

A Beautiful Wedding at Houchins in Essex

Houchins is one of those Essex wedding venues that gives a photographer plenty to work with.

There are beautiful spaces for getting ready, the ceremony and celebrations, as well as opportunities to step outside and create something a little more creative with the couple.

But while a venue can provide an incredible backdrop, it's the people who make the wedding.

And Phoebe and Harry certainly brought the personality.

Their wedding was full of friends and family celebrating with them, creating the kind of atmosphere where the photographer can simply move around, observe what's happening and capture the story as it unfolds.

For me, that's a huge part of creative wedding photography.

It's not just about finding a pretty background and asking a couple to stand in front of it.

It's about finding the moments, the light, the reactions and the little details that make their wedding photographs completely personal to them.

Phoebe & Harry – A Match Made in Heaven

Some couples just seem to fit.

Phoebe and Harry are one of those couples.

Their connection was obvious throughout the day, and it made photographing them incredibly easy. There was no need to manufacture moments or spend ages trying to make them look comfortable in front of the camera.

They were simply enjoying being together.

And that's exactly what I want from my couples.

Enjoy your wedding. I'll worry about the photographs.

I don't want you spending your wedding day constantly thinking about the camera. I want you talking to your friends, laughing with your family, drinking champagne and enjoying every second with the person you've just married.

One of the reasons I love photographing weddings at venues like Houchins is the opportunity to mix different styles of photography throughout the day.

There are the emotional photographs.

And then there are those photographs where we can slow things down for a few minutes and create something a little more dramatic.

Why I love creative wedding portraits

Your wedding portraits don't have to feel like a formal photoshoot.

In fact, I think the best photographs happen when couples are relaxed and having fun.

I'll give you a little direction when you need it, but I'm not interested in making every photograph look stiff and overly posed.

Instead, I want to create unique wedding photos that look and feel like you.

And because I love working with light, I'll also be looking for opportunities throughout the day to create something that has that little bit extra.

That's particularly important to me because I want every couple to have photographs that aren't just nice.

While those creative portraits are an important part of my work, some of my favourite photographs from a wedding are the ones that happen completely naturally.

A huge reaction from the guests.

These moments don't need directing.

They simply need someone paying attention.

You want to see how they photograph an entire wedding – not just the ten best photographs they've taken all year.

A great wedding photographer should be able to tell the complete story of your day.

Making the Most of Your Wedding Photography

If you're planning your own wedding at Houchins or another Essex wedding venue, here are a few simple things you can do to make the most of your photography.

1. Give yourselves some breathing space

Your wedding day will disappear incredibly quickly.

Try not to fill every minute of the schedule.

Allowing a little breathing room gives your photographer opportunities to capture natural moments and gives you time to actually enjoy what's happening.

2. Trust your photographer

You've chosen your photographer because you love their work.

Trust them.

If they suddenly say, "Come with me – I've got an idea," there's probably a reason!

Give them the freedom to find interesting light and locations.

3. Allow a little time for couple portraits

You don't need an hour.

Even 15–20 minutes can make a huge difference, especially if your photographer knows how to use the available light and surroundings.

4. Don't worry about being "awkward"

Almost every couple tells me:

"We're terrible in front of the camera."

You're not.

You're just not professional models – and neither am I!

I'll give you enough direction to keep things moving while allowing the photographs to feel natural.

5. Have fun!

Seriously.

This is probably the most important one.

Your happiness will always show in your photographs.

And Phoebe and Harry certainly weren't short of smiles.

Their personalities, their relationship and the people around them created the atmosphere that made the photographs come alive.

That's something I always try to remember when photographing a wedding.
