A Beautiful Summer Wedding at Guildhall Faversham – Emma & Josh

What a way to finish my August wedding diary!

After a couple of busy days photographing weddings, Emma and Josh’s wedding at Guildhall Faversham was the perfect way to round things off. Their day was packed with smiles, laughter, beautiful details, gorgeous cobbled streets and, quite frankly, blistering sunshine!

There was something really special about this wedding. It felt relaxed, fun and incredibly personal – exactly the sort of atmosphere I love capturing with my creative wedding photography.

And there was an added connection that made this one particularly special for me. Emma has worked in the bridal industry for many years, so being asked to photograph her own wedding was a huge compliment. When someone who knows the wedding industry inside out chooses you to capture such an important day, you know you have a pretty big job to do!

And I absolutely loved it.

Getting Ready at Bijou Bridal Studio

The day began at Bijou Bridal Studio, where Emma got ready surrounded by all the excitement and anticipation of the morning.

It was especially fitting that Emma's preparations took place at the studio where she works. Rather than simply being another bridal prep location, it was a place that already had meaning for her – making those getting-ready photographs even more personal.

With hair, makeup, the dress and all those final preparations coming together, there was plenty to photograph before Emma made her way to Guildhall Faversham.

For me, bridal preparations aren't just about photographing the dress hanging up or a pair of shoes. They're about capturing the atmosphere – the laughter, the nerves, the little moments between friends and family and those quiet seconds before everything changes.

Why bridal preparations are worth photographing

If you're planning your own wedding, don't underestimate how much storytelling can happen during the morning.

Some of my favourite photographs from a wedding can come from moments that weren't planned at all. A reaction from a bridesmaid, a parent seeing the dress for the first time, champagne being poured or simply a bride taking a moment to breathe.

These are the photographs that help tell the whole story of your wedding day.

A Wedding at Guildhall Faversham

Emma and Josh's ceremony took place at Guildhall Faversham, providing a beautiful setting for the next chapter of their day.

There were plenty of smiles, plenty of emotion and, of course, that wonderful moment when Emma and Josh finally became husband and wife.

One of the things I particularly loved was photographing them walking back through their guests after the ceremony. Rather than simply being a traditional posed photograph, it captures the energy of the moment – their guests surrounding them, everyone celebrating and the two of them enjoying that we've actually just got married! feeling.

These are the kinds of unique wedding photos I look for throughout a wedding. The photographs don't always need to be complicated. Sometimes it's about recognising a moment and being ready to capture it.

Creative Wedding Photography Among the Streets of Faversham

One of the biggest highlights of Emma and Josh's wedding was heading outside into the streets of Faversham.

The historic cobbled streets provided a fantastic backdrop for their couple portraits, and the glorious summer sunshine certainly wasn't holding back!

This is exactly why I love using the surroundings of a wedding venue rather than relying solely on traditional gardens or purpose-built photo locations.

Creative wedding photography is often about seeing what is already there differently.

The architecture, the light, the textures of the buildings and even the cobbles can all become part of the photograph.

Emma and Josh looked incredible against the streets of Faversham, and the combination of the summer light and the historic surroundings gave their photographs a real sense of place.

After all, your wedding photographs shouldn't necessarily look like everyone else's.

Making the Most of Your Couple Portraits

One thing I always tell my couples is that your couple portraits don't need to take hours.

You don't need to spend half your wedding day standing in a field being told where to put your hands!

A short amount of time in the right location, with good light and a photographer who knows how to work quickly, can produce a whole collection of photographs.

For Emma and Josh, we were able to take advantage of the streets around Faversham and then the beautiful evening light later in the day.

The key is good light, good locations and giving your photographer the freedom to create.

I also want my couples to actually enjoy the experience. There's no point in creating a technically perfect photograph if you're standing there feeling awkward and wondering when you can get back to your guests!

Golden Hour, Sunlight and a Little Bit of Magic

Later in the day, we were able to take advantage of some beautiful warm evening light.

The sun was low, the surroundings were glowing and Emma's veil provided the perfect opportunity to create something a little more dramatic.

This is one of those photographs where everything comes together – the couple, the location, the light and just the right moment.

I'm a big believer that your wedding photographer should be looking for these opportunities throughout the day.

The light is constantly changing, and sometimes the best photographs happen when you simply step outside for five minutes at exactly the right time.

From Guildhall Faversham to The Quay Pub

After the ceremony and photographs around Faversham, the celebrations continued at The Quay Pub in Faversham.

It was the perfect continuation to the day – relaxed, social and full of the people who mattered most to Emma and Josh.

And, as with every wedding, it was those little unscripted moments that made the day.

The laughter.

The hugs.

The reactions.

The kisses.

The people who probably didn't realise they were being photographed.

That's what documentary wedding photography is all about.

Of course, I'll always make time for those creative portraits and the photographs that are designed to become wall hangers, but I also want your gallery to bring back the feeling of the day.

Years from now, I want you to look at a photograph and remember exactly what was happening five seconds before and five seconds afterwards.
